Buying a Ukulele?
I am so pleased to hear from many parents that they are interested in buying a uke for home! I love that the kids will have the opportunity to bring music to your family! Please see below for my suggestions on what to purchase.
The Grandview parents have purchased 32 Kala-brand ukuleles for our classroom.
We have soprano ukuleles at school. The concert uke is tuned the same way as a soprano, but it is a little bigger (for bigger fingers). My personal uke is a concert-size. My brother really wanted to learn to play as well, so we purchased him a Tenor-size. It is tuned the same as the sopranos and concerts, but it is even bigger.

There are the instruments we have at school. They are a good quality instrument with a good tone. The strings hold their tune nicely once the strings have been stretched.
Wilbur, at Melody Music Shop, has been a WONDERFUL SUPPORTER of music education at Grandview! He has helped us in tremendous ways! Melody Music sells Kala brand ukes and Snarks.
Ukuleles need tuned each time your child sits down to play it. Snark tuners are very easy for the kids to use. They might need help with understanding which way to turn the pegs, but there is a video below to help them through it.
Makala is Kala's "entry-level" ukes. Although they work, they are, in my opinion, more like a toy and less like the instruments we have. They do have fun colors, but I have found that my son's blue Makala doesn't sound as good as the Kalas here at school. The Makalas do not seems to stay in tune as well as the Kalas.
I call this the BMW of ukes. Lanikai is a WONDERFUL instrument, but they are a little more expensive. Melody Music also carries this brand. If you feel your child is serious about learning the uke, this would be a great purchase!
